Beauty Report: The High/Low List

Beauty Report: The High/Low List

High-Low List

The age old adage, “You Get What You Pay For,” is something that I often hear people say. However, is it really true? Are we savvy consumers able to find similar items with the same quality? We all wish we could afford the La Mer Face Cream for $310.00 but sometimes our budgets don’t allow this behavior. But on the flip side, does our economical shopping sprees at drug stores actually add up to this amount. The discussion on whether buying the La Mer versus Nutrogena shouldn’t be about the price but rather the value of the cream. In other words, what benefits does the pricer items provide that the rather inexpensive ones are not able to offer. That’s what the adage really entails. My solution, especially on a budget, is that you need a mix of both. In order to get the best bang for your buck, you need to combine high-quality, value-worthy items with the drug-store brands to have the finest results.

Below I provided solutions on both ends of the spectrum. You can pick and choose which ones fit your needs as well as what you can afford. Tailoring your shopping cart to your essentials will have the greatest effect in the long run. Enjoy!

The High/Low List: Face Cream

The High low List face cream

La Mer Face Cream ($310.00) / Kiehl’s Moisturizing Face Cream ($26.00)

La Mer
With the nutrient-rich sea broth provided by Kelp, the “Miracle Broth” AKA La Mer Face Cream promises to bring life back into your dulling skin. Yes, it will set you back $310.00 for a 2 oz jar, however, the abundance of happy reviews as well as the numerous awards this product owns, lets you know it’s high-quality and works. If you want to start with the right products for your skin regimen, this is one product you should put on your wish list.

However, for a fraction of the cost, KIEHL’S Moisturizing Face Cream, promises to do the same, especially for dry skin. This brand is never one to disappoint and uses quality ingredients as well, such as glycoproteins to lock in moisture and smooth the skin. It boasts a healthy review of over 650 happy customers, alone, on its site.

The High/Low List: Mascara

The High/low List Mascara

Chantecaille Faux Cils Longest Lash Mascara-Colorless ($70.00) / Elf 3-in-1 Mascara ($5.48)

We want our mascara to create longer and thicker lashes. Make those beauties pop, please. However, when it comes to coating the lower lashes, most brands fall pretty short. For me, the wands are designed for the upper lashes, but way too cumbersome for the lowers. This is why, Elf 3-in-1 Mascara shines above most high-end mascaras. It’s rounded edge easily covers the lowers, while the uppers are lengthened by the rest of the wand. Here’s one area, where you can save on your beauty supplies.

The High/Low List: Nails

The High/low List Nail Polish

Burberry Beauty Nail Polish ($22.00) / Whim Reds Nail Lacquer ($10.00)

With both products looking identical in structure and promising similar long wear/no chip duration, it would be hard to cough up 12.00 more for the exclusive brand of Burberrys. However, I should add that nail polish is one area where I tend to save my pennies, so this may be why I would go for the later. If you have tried Burberry’s, what’s your thoughts?

The High/Low List: Contouring

The High/low List Contour

Anastasia Contour Kit ($40.00) / 1PC CITY COLOR CONTOUR EFFECTS PALETTE ($6.42)

Here’s my 2-cents on contouring pallets, which stems from my history of oil-painting. If you are going to try this technique, the most effective and natural looks are from multi skin-tone pallets, not just a bronzer and/or highlighter. The second one from 1PC City Color Contour may be a great buy at $6.99, but powder based application with only three tones, when compared to Anastasia’s kit of six, falls quite short.

Plum Hair Color: Different Is Good

Plum Hair Color: Going Aubergine

Plum Hair Color

Happy Monday, Everyone!

So, I did something a little drastic with my hair, but I couldn’t be happier with the dramatic results. On my last post, I discussed one of the latest beauty trends, Ecaille. I was determined to have this done and even set up an appointment this past Friday. However, when I walked in things changed. You see, sitting in 8 other chairs were females getting the same color process. Trust me, Ecaille is beautiful, however, I’ve always been someone who marches to the beat of her own drum. I knew immediately that I didn’t want it but I was sick of my boring locks. So when I told my stylist that I was thinking of going red…maybe even plum, his eyes lit up. And the rest was history. Oh…and it’s Aubergine…not Plum. Lets be serious, please. 🙂

Check out the before and after as well as the in-between. Enjoy!!

5 Beauty Trends You Should Know

5 Beauty Trends You Should Know

Beauty Trends

When it comes to fads, I’m not one to jump on the “band-wagon,” so to speak. My mentality is to wait out the storm and see what the overall conception of the product produces over time. However, some trends are just too good or weird  and should be shown to you all. I should admit that I haven’t tried all of these items. In fact, one of them, “Sprouts from the Head,” has not been released to the U.S. but it was innovative enough to show to you all. Enjoy!

Beauty Trend: Microneedling

Beauty Trends Microneedling

I own and love the Rodan + Fields Redefine AMP MD Micro-Exfoliating Roller. This at-home device is one innovation that is intended to stimulate collagen production. On a larger scale, this treatment called microneedling, is actually performed at a physicians office, where the microneedle is combined with radio-frequency to improve and plump skin damaged by acne, deep wrinkles and scars.

Beauty Trend: Ecaille

Beauty Trends Ecaille

Move over ombre and the softer version sombre, we now have a new force in town, Ecaille. This Parisian style is the latest 2015 trend and is the richer, more natural form of the ombre look. More dimension is added with richer browns and golden or caramel balayage is placed around the head. I, for one, love this technique and have actually made an appointment to have this reproduced. Stay tuned for those photos.

100 Years of Wedding Gowns and Lingerie

100 Years of Wedding Gowns and Lingerie

100 Years of Lingerie

Back in April, when I first started writing, I shared a video that demonstrated the transformation of beauty trends throughout the last century as well as the fads that had instantly surfaced and just as quickly died. Since then, these “100 Years of (Fill in the Blank)” have been quite popular on Youtube. For me, these videos demonstrate why fashion is not about the labels or the amount of money spent on apparel or products. It’s a walking historical perspective of our society. Fashion shows the adaptation that society has demonstrated with cultural change. It speaks about the history of art and design. By just observation alone, you’re learning without realizing it. Every movement in art is commenced by a historical event or preceded by such. And when you really start to evaluate these eras, well, that’s when things start to get interesting. However, I’m starting to get off track and would love to discuss my fondness of Art, but this is about the 100 Years of Beauty, especially the ones I recently found.

Lucky for me, my boyfriend was browsing on Twitter and happened to come across this very obsession but in this case, it’s even better. It’s 100 Years of Wedding Gowns and Lingerie. I’ve copied both videos for your enjoyment. Perhaps it is just me, but if the lingerie video is correct, we have sincerely screwed up as time as gone on. But this could also explain why I’m such  a Vintage Girl at heart. Maybe I was born in the wrong time period, either way, these are some great videos to explore. Enjoy!

100 Years of Wedding Gowns

My favorite era has to be ’45 but I’m a sucker for lace.

100 Years of Lingerie

Everything from the ’70s and prior is splendid. However, after that, it looks plain and especially cheap.

What’s your opinion?

Anyway…. This time, I decided to show a couple of costumes to stimulate your creativity. Some of these ideas are quite genius, as well as funny. While other costumes are simple for you DIYers. What’s important about all of them is that they are definitely unique. Click through each of the photos below to figure out how you’ll be “dressing up” for 2015. Happy Monday!

Best Halloween Makeup Tutorials

Halloween Makeup Tutorials

As we’re winding down on September, I thought getting a head start on Halloween would be a wonderful introduction to October. Perhaps, you’re not a fan of MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY. The day that not only signifies to wear less and get away with it, but your poor makeup habits can come in handy…”Hey, I meant to look like a cheap whore. I even practiced it.” And with the prices of costumes equaling a paycheck, what better way to stand out then using your own makeup to perfect the best costume….EVER. It’s simple, inexpensive and I’m pretty sure no one will have your attire. So I took the liberty of finding three great tutorials to get you started. (Click through each page at the bottom to see more). I even commenced with a picture of myself, so you can see where I started and how I probably didn’t “Nail It.”

Note: Be Nice 🙂

Dismiss the bare midriff. I know its “so 2010” but I was trying to bring it back, which it didn’t work. So lets move on…..

Easy HairStyles For Long Hair

Easy HairStyles For Long Hair: 5 Ways to Make Your Morning Better

5 Easy Hairstyles

So, I have a confession…I’m not a morning person. I tend to hit the snooze button three to four times and I even have an alarm that goes off in multiple successions, just to get my butt out of bed. This translates to little time to get ready for the day and get out the door. And for me, my hair tends to take the majority of my time. My long brunette locks have a special kink, when not straightened, and I’m not in favor of using hot appliances, continually, on it. Therefor, finding easy, time-efficient methods, to still look prepped for the day, is something that I gravitate towards. This is why these 5 easy hairstyles are a godsend. All of them can be done in less than 5 minutes and you will still have time to hit the snooze button…maybe one more time.

I designed each of the photos below, however, these 5 hairstyles were found on YouTube, which I’ll link each of the users below the picture. Happy Styling! 🙂

Foot Remedies Picture

Every once in a while, I become pretty impressed with myself. Finishing a post with ease, whipping up an amazing meal and/or reupholstering a camelback couch, for the first time, are all high on my trophy list. However, nothing compares to trying and perfectly executing a DIY Pinterest Pin, which I know many of you can relate. Us, DIY Pinners, have one thing in common: We have high expectations and sometimes time gets in our way. This is why the two DIY Foot Remedies I chose were not only quick but most importantly, really worked.

I’m pretty hard on my feet. Shift work at the hospital coupled with running each day has made my feet look pretty fugly. I love getting regular pedicures, however, finding the time to fit this in can be quite a task. So, I went searching for at-home treatments to put life back into my feet.

Both of these treatments use household items, so hopefully you have them in your own pantry. If not, they’re all relatively inexpensive. Besides saving money, the mere fact that you know what you are putting or placing on your skin should make you feel good. There are way too many beauty products that state “NATURAL,” when in reality, its farther from the truth. So try these remedies, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

DIY Foot Remedies: Foot Soak

DIY Foot Remedies: Foot Soak

Listerine and Vinegar are two items that I normally wouldn’t consider for a foot soak, but since I had both of these items, well…what the hell. And let me tell you, my feet were vitually scrubbed clean and smelled dentine fresh. All you need are the following:

2 cups Warm Water
1 cup Listerine
1 cup Vinegar
Tub/bowl that can fit both of your feet

Mix all the ingredients together and let your feet soak for roughly 20 minutes. Once finished, scrub dry with a towel and use a moisturizer to continue to soften your feet.

DIY Foot Remedies: Foot Scrub

DIY Foot Remedies Foot Scrub

Our local Pedispa has an amazing almond scrub for your hands and feet, which I wanted to try to replicate. I was unable to obtain any almond oil or extract, so instead I chose coconut oil. (Which, by the way, I love love love coconut oil; so you will soon see plenty of posts on its many uses).  Also, I added a couple drops of lavender & peppermint oil by AROMATHERAPY, however, you can add any essential oil that you see fit. This scrub had the same consistency as the Pedispa and I was truly happy with how it came out. It immediately softened and smoothed my feet on the first application and the smell was amazing. You can use this on your body and/or hands, as well as make a separate batch to keep in the shower.  Again, this treatment was simple with the following ingredients:

½ Cup Sugar
½ Cup Coconut Oil
5-10 Drops of Essential Oils (optional)
1 Airtight Jar

Mix all of the ingredients together and store in the Airtight jar for up to one month. Use one spoonful of the scrub for each application and scrub your feet or hands vigorously. This scrub was the highlight of my DIY foot remedies, since it turned out so well.

I hope you try both of these treatments and have just as much success. If you know of any other DIY treatments, please let me know. Have a great weekend! 🙂

Best Skin Care Routine for Early 30s

Best Skin Care Routine for Early 30s-What You Should Be Doing Right Now

Best Skin Care picture

Hitting your “Dirty 30s” should be a moment for celebration. You finally made it out of your adventurous and, at times, carefree(less), Y-O-L-O-20s. This decade may have shaped your into the saintly female you are right now, but your skin probably took a beating. Have no worries, my friends, since I have provided a daily regimen to lead you agelessly into your 40s and perhaps even reverse the clock to your youthful 20s.

Roughly two months ago, I was offered an opportunity that I could not resist (I’ll speak more about this soon, I promise). I realized that this amazing chance will throw me into the spotlight and my own skin care routine was less than par. So, along with continuing to eat well, hydrating as well as obtaining a goodnight’s sleep; I needed to “beef” up my daily routine. I have hyperpigmentation that is due to a nasty habit of picking at my skin in my 20’s. This coupled with not routinely wearing sunscreen created the discoloration. However, there’s good news; my hyperpigmentation is virtually gone and will continue to diminish by following the steps I provided.

Although, this routine consists of 7 steps, each one is not only simple but requires minimal time. In fact, the entire regimen may be done in less than 20 minutes.

Best Skin Care Routine Step 1 & 2: Double Wash

Best Skin Care Routine Remove Impurities

Perfect Cleanse Nourishing Cleansing Oil ($36.00)

Have you ever noticed how flawless Korean skin appears? Not only at a young age are they taught to maintain and protect this vital organ, but they do so with a 7 to sometimes 17 step routine. I’m not disciplined enough for 17 steps, however, I love the idea of Double Washing. The first wash is meant to remove the makeup and dirt without drying out the skin by using an oil based product. I use this daily in the morning and night. When cleansing your skin, make sure to protect your skin by doing small, circular motions all around your face. The second wash is with a creamy, nourishing cleanser to remove the remaining dirt/makeup and once again, the same soft, circular motions are performed.

Ombre Lips: THINK Gradation Not Color Blocking

The above picture was taken recently and shows my love for this trend that never wants to end. Whether you favor its chromatic composition or you’re seeking new ways to enlarge your kissable pout, ombre lips have seen an amazingly healthy rise, especially in creativity. It’s dramatic and dynamic with its elaborate pigmentation and when done correctly, I believe it can be quite stunning.  And like every trend, the execution of the steps is critical to get to the desired looks. This is why I shared my favorite tutorial so you can download and save for the next rainy-day.
