Beauty Report: The High/Low List

Beauty Report: The High/Low List

High-Low List

The age old adage, “You Get What You Pay For,” is something that I often hear people say. However, is it really true? Are we savvy consumers able to find similar items with the same quality? We all wish we could afford the La Mer Face Cream for $310.00 but sometimes our budgets don’t allow this behavior. But on the flip side, does our economical shopping sprees at drug stores actually add up to this amount. The discussion on whether buying the La Mer versus Nutrogena shouldn’t be about the price but rather the value of the cream. In other words, what benefits does the pricer items provide that the rather inexpensive ones are not able to offer. That’s what the adage really entails. My solution, especially on a budget, is that you need a mix of both. In order to get the best bang for your buck, you need to combine high-quality, value-worthy items with the drug-store brands to have the finest results.

Below I provided solutions on both ends of the spectrum. You can pick and choose which ones fit your needs as well as what you can afford. Tailoring your shopping cart to your essentials will have the greatest effect in the long run. Enjoy!

The High/Low List: Face Cream

The High low List face cream

La Mer Face Cream ($310.00) / Kiehl’s Moisturizing Face Cream ($26.00)

La Mer
With the nutrient-rich sea broth provided by Kelp, the “Miracle Broth” AKA La Mer Face Cream promises to bring life back into your dulling skin. Yes, it will set you back $310.00 for a 2 oz jar, however, the abundance of happy reviews as well as the numerous awards this product owns, lets you know it’s high-quality and works. If you want to start with the right products for your skin regimen, this is one product you should put on your wish list.

However, for a fraction of the cost, KIEHL’S Moisturizing Face Cream, promises to do the same, especially for dry skin. This brand is never one to disappoint and uses quality ingredients as well, such as glycoproteins to lock in moisture and smooth the skin. It boasts a healthy review of over 650 happy customers, alone, on its site.

The High/Low List: Mascara

The High/low List Mascara

Chantecaille Faux Cils Longest Lash Mascara-Colorless ($70.00) / Elf 3-in-1 Mascara ($5.48)

We want our mascara to create longer and thicker lashes. Make those beauties pop, please. However, when it comes to coating the lower lashes, most brands fall pretty short. For me, the wands are designed for the upper lashes, but way too cumbersome for the lowers. This is why, Elf 3-in-1 Mascara shines above most high-end mascaras. It’s rounded edge easily covers the lowers, while the uppers are lengthened by the rest of the wand. Here’s one area, where you can save on your beauty supplies.

The High/Low List: Nails

The High/low List Nail Polish

Burberry Beauty Nail Polish ($22.00) / Whim Reds Nail Lacquer ($10.00)

With both products looking identical in structure and promising similar long wear/no chip duration, it would be hard to cough up 12.00 more for the exclusive brand of Burberrys. However, I should add that nail polish is one area where I tend to save my pennies, so this may be why I would go for the later. If you have tried Burberry’s, what’s your thoughts?

The High/Low List: Contouring

The High/low List Contour

Anastasia Contour Kit ($40.00) / 1PC CITY COLOR CONTOUR EFFECTS PALETTE ($6.42)

Here’s my 2-cents on contouring pallets, which stems from my history of oil-painting. If you are going to try this technique, the most effective and natural looks are from multi skin-tone pallets, not just a bronzer and/or highlighter. The second one from 1PC City Color Contour may be a great buy at $6.99, but powder based application with only three tones, when compared to Anastasia’s kit of six, falls quite short.

Foot Remedies Picture

Every once in a while, I become pretty impressed with myself. Finishing a post with ease, whipping up an amazing meal and/or reupholstering a camelback couch, for the first time, are all high on my trophy list. However, nothing compares to trying and perfectly executing a DIY Pinterest Pin, which I know many of you can relate. Us, DIY Pinners, have one thing in common: We have high expectations and sometimes time gets in our way. This is why the two DIY Foot Remedies I chose were not only quick but most importantly, really worked.

I’m pretty hard on my feet. Shift work at the hospital coupled with running each day has made my feet look pretty fugly. I love getting regular pedicures, however, finding the time to fit this in can be quite a task. So, I went searching for at-home treatments to put life back into my feet.

Both of these treatments use household items, so hopefully you have them in your own pantry. If not, they’re all relatively inexpensive. Besides saving money, the mere fact that you know what you are putting or placing on your skin should make you feel good. There are way too many beauty products that state “NATURAL,” when in reality, its farther from the truth. So try these remedies, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

DIY Foot Remedies: Foot Soak

DIY Foot Remedies: Foot Soak

Listerine and Vinegar are two items that I normally wouldn’t consider for a foot soak, but since I had both of these items, well…what the hell. And let me tell you, my feet were vitually scrubbed clean and smelled dentine fresh. All you need are the following:

2 cups Warm Water
1 cup Listerine
1 cup Vinegar
Tub/bowl that can fit both of your feet

Mix all the ingredients together and let your feet soak for roughly 20 minutes. Once finished, scrub dry with a towel and use a moisturizer to continue to soften your feet.

DIY Foot Remedies: Foot Scrub

DIY Foot Remedies Foot Scrub

Our local Pedispa has an amazing almond scrub for your hands and feet, which I wanted to try to replicate. I was unable to obtain any almond oil or extract, so instead I chose coconut oil. (Which, by the way, I love love love coconut oil; so you will soon see plenty of posts on its many uses).  Also, I added a couple drops of lavender & peppermint oil by AROMATHERAPY, however, you can add any essential oil that you see fit. This scrub had the same consistency as the Pedispa and I was truly happy with how it came out. It immediately softened and smoothed my feet on the first application and the smell was amazing. You can use this on your body and/or hands, as well as make a separate batch to keep in the shower.  Again, this treatment was simple with the following ingredients:

½ Cup Sugar
½ Cup Coconut Oil
5-10 Drops of Essential Oils (optional)
1 Airtight Jar

Mix all of the ingredients together and store in the Airtight jar for up to one month. Use one spoonful of the scrub for each application and scrub your feet or hands vigorously. This scrub was the highlight of my DIY foot remedies, since it turned out so well.

I hope you try both of these treatments and have just as much success. If you know of any other DIY treatments, please let me know. Have a great weekend! 🙂

OMBRE LIPS Easy “How-To”

OMBRE LIPS Recommendations and “How-To”

Lace to Lashes Ombre Lips

Ombre Lips: THINK Gradation Not Color Blocking

The above picture was taken recently and shows my love for this trend that never wants to end. Whether you favor its chromatic composition or you’re seeking new ways to enlarge your kissable pout, ombre lips have seen an amazingly healthy rise, especially in creativity. It’s dramatic and dynamic with its elaborate pigmentation and when done correctly, I believe it can be quite stunning.  And like every trend, the execution of the steps is critical to get to the desired looks. This is why I shared my favorite tutorial so you can download and save for the next rainy-day.

Ombre Lips How-To-1

50’s Diner Date-Part II

I love the vintage flair that’s in trend right now. I’ve always been partial to this style, but never fully incorporated it into my daily look. Perhaps it’s due to wearing scrubs roughly 90% of my waking hours, but in any event, I decided that this season I’m going to start. And to help motivate me to break out of my normal routine, I designed some fashion sets, starting with the 50s era. I’m using old Diner Menus as the backgrounds and I really love how they are turning out. Last week, I illustrated a set that took place in a “Vixen-ish” Diner. So to change things up, my second set or scene, for this matter, regards a first date. It’s almost becoming a mini story where one of the girls from the first set meets her “prince charming” and in my second set, she is on this date. However, this is no ordinary first-date. Of course not…..who wants to see that. Look closely at the menu and decide for yourself what is going on. Enjoy!

Below, you will see the newest set first, followed by the “Vixen-ish Diner.” If you want more ideas on Vintage style and flair, you can follow me here.

Casual Luxe

Casual Luxe is a great way to look great without trying too hard. What’s even better is how easy this look can be emulated. Grab some leggings or skinny jeans, a white tee, a graphic cardigan or even shawl and the most important are some colorful sneakers. I just love those from New Balance and if you aren’t into those colors, you can customize them here to what you see fit. Happy Styling 🙂

Maxi Dresses for Everyone-Part 1

Lots of pictures but I’m going to keep it short on text, since today is a very busy Sunday. Hope everyone’s weekend has been wonderful. Below I provided you all with some “eye candy” of my favorite Maxis. Let me know what’s your favorite style or if you have any questions. Enjoy
